Road Racing

Road Racing

At Bristol Road Club, we have a proud tradition of road bike racing stretching back over 95 years. Our riders are a regular presence in the local road racing scene, competing in all categories at Criterium races held at Odd Down and Castle Combe, as well as in races further afield, and in road races such as the Cotswold League.

Many of our riders have gone on to achieve great success, advancing to elite and professional levels. As a club, we are also proud to organise two major local road races – the Severn Bridge Road Race, which has been held since 1972, and A Bridge Too Far Road Race on the Mendip Hills.

Track Cycling

Bristol is fortunate to be located just 40 minutes from the Geraint Thomas Velodrome in Newport, providing convenient access to training sessions for riders of all levels, including club-specific sessions.

While some of Newport sessions may require track accreditation, many of our members are experienced track riders and there are local coaches who can provide guidance and support to help you get started on “the boards.”

Time Trials

At Bristol Road Club, we have many members who are dedicated time-trialists. While we don’t currently organise regular time trials ourselves, there are several weekly local options to take part in during the summer months.

These events offer excellent opportunities for our riders to test their skills and compete against fellow riders in the local community.

Hill Climbing

The Hill Climbing season runs from September to October, and the WTTA Hill Climb Series is a local league that showcases some of the best riders in the area.

There are several local hill climb races to participate in, including the University of Bristol’s Hill Climb on Belmont Hill, Bristol South’s on Burrington Combe, and our own event The Raj Soni Memorial Hill Climb on Cheddar Gorge.

In recent years our members achieved impressive results with riders winning the men’s veteran British Hill Climbing Championship at the V40+ and V50+ levels.

Cyclocross

If you’re a fan of mud and knobbly tires, you’ll love the local cyclocross races in the Western Cyclocross League. This exciting and inclusive series offering plenty of fun and competition for riders of all levels. The courses in the Bristol area feature a mix of grass, mud, and paved surfaces, as well as challenging obstacles like barriers, and sand pits. In recent years, Bristol Road Club riders have taken part in prestigious events like the Yorkshire Three Peaks Cyclocross Race and the UCI Masters World Championships. In the past we have members who have even earned Junior and National championship trophies.

Zwift Racing

Zwift racing has become increasingly popular in recent years as an exciting and accessible way to race (from the comfort of your own home!) In 2020 we had many riders taking part in the LIZR (Local Interclub Zwift Racing) League, winning both the series overall and the individual women’s and men’s leagues.

During the winter months we enter teams at different categories in the WTRL racing league. These races take place on virtual courses, providing a unique and challenging experience to test your physical and mental strength.

In recent years, Bristol Road Club riders have competed in showcase Virtual Racing events held in Bristol for brands like Zwift and Wahoo, and one of our riders won first male e-racing national championship.
